French
Settlement Historical Society
The
French Settlement Historical Society was recorded with the
Secretary of State on October 29, 1976. It was created from
members of the Bicentennial Committee to study and preserve
the history of French Settlement and surrounding areas.
A
Use Agreement between the Village of French Settlement and
the French Settlement Historical Society granted the right
to use the Creole style house, known as the old town hall,
for the purpose of operating a museum. The Creole House
Museum was formerly the Alexander Decareau house built in
1898.
The
society is responsible for introducing a local genetic disease
to Dr. Henry Rothschild, Professor of Medicine and Anatomy,
Louisiana State University of Medicine, New Orleans. It
grew into a community project sponsored by the French Settlement
Historical Society, proving the importance of genealogical
documentation and encouraging the study of family history.
The
society also has played a part in the restoration and preservation
of the old Community cemetery with graves dating back to
1829.
The
French Settlement Historical Register has been published
by the society for the years 1976 through to 1982. There
is much information given in these registers pertaining
to the history of French Settlement and its pioneering families.
Meeting
are held at the Creole House Museum at 7 p.m. on the last
Monday of January, April, July, and October. Membership
is open to the public and the annual dues are $5 per year.
