Message from the Mayor

The Village of French Settlement is a unique, primarily rural community in which to live. Since our incorporation in 1965, we have slowly grown from a population of 670 to an estimated population of 970. Our village boundaries are 1000 feet from the center of La. Hwy. 16 (both sides).

What makes our Village most unique is our commitment to providing quality personal and customer service to our residents, businesses and visitors. We strongly believe communication is the key to our success. Our website is a step forward in this process. As elected officials, there may be times when we are unable to solve all problems for our residents due to the fact that we must carefully abide by the law and not become involved in civil matters. It is with much regret that during these occasions we are unable to assist.

Many are not aware that we do not collect sales or property taxes in French Settlement. The only taxes collected are what is known as 'franchise taxes' which comes from cable, utility, insurance etc companies. This one day may change as more demands are made on our local government to provide addtional services. I would like to see any new taxes put off for the time being until it becomes a necessity. We are all taxed enough as I am certain most would agree.

As our community grows, our goal is to continue to meet the needs and demands of those we represent, and of those who are simply stopping to enjoy our heritage and culture. So, whether you are a life-long resident, or a visitor, we hope that you enjoy our website and our Village. Please feel free to email comments to frenchsettlement@hotmail.com
