Government
Month Program
In 2006, the school no longer wished to participate in
the Government Month Program. This has been an excellent,
educational program that the 5th and 6th grade students looked
forward to each year. It helped them to understand the election
and campaign process along with understanding how local government
operates. We regret that this program will no longer be utilized
and that students have lost the opportunity to participate.
They are our future leaders.
Pictures from previous years will be available soon.
GOVERNMENT MONTH PROGRAM
TOGETHER WE CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE
The
Government Month Educational Program was introduced by the
Village of French Settlement's Board of Aldermen in 1994.
Our
objectives are to reach the youth's of our community and in
doing so, encourage the next generation to become involved
in community affairs. Each school year, these objectives are
fulfilled through the process of coordinated lesson plans,
field trips, speeches by local leaders and participation in
a political campaign.
This
project allows the fifth and sixth grade students to participate
in a real election of their own using official voting machines.
They campaign and elect a student mayor, three aldermen and
a police chief. The nominees are selected from the sixth grade
class only. The remaining sixth graders, along with the fifth
graders, are the voters. After the election, the student officials
meet with their counterpart town official to get a better
understanding of their newly elected positions. Then the student
officials prepare an agenda and preside over a mock-meeting
prior to the regular monthly meeting. A post reception follows
the mock-meeting.
